USF’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Support
In an attempt to slow down the spread of Covid-19, India's Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown starting from midnight of 25th March 2020, for 21 days.
Next day news reported how the migrant labourers were stranded as train and bus services were stopped. We discussed with local NGOs and the ground reports were very disturbing. With no work, daily wage worker families had no food. There were families with children and elderly people and many of them didn’t have ration even for a day.
Also, because of lock-down, movement was restricted. Government of India approached NGOs, to help feed and provide shelter to lockdown-hit migrants. These NGOs with support from the local police and authorities could distribute cooked food and ration to the needy people in their respective areas of work.
When we looked at the needs, it was huge and is understandable as 80 per cent of our workforce is in the informal sector and one-third of these are casual labourers. Each location had hundreds of families who were struggling for ration for a day.
We decided to provide food and hygiene kit for the underprivileged and daily wage workers, by partnering with some NGOs. We put together food and hygiene kit containing 2 kg rice, 2 kg wheat flour, 1 kg dal, 1 ltr cooking oil, 1 kg sugar, 1 kg salt, 1 packet biscuit and 1 soap bar. Each kit costing Rs. 750.
Our criterion for distribution is simple-
First give the kit to those who don’t have ration even for a day.
Till now, we have distributed 400 food and hygiene kits in various slum pockets of Mumbai.
We thank all our donors, who have come forward and contributed for the cause in this time of crisis.
The lock down has been extended till 3rd May 2020. We now aim to distribute 5000 kits.
We urge everyone to come forward and donate for this noble cause and help us to support those who are in distress.
